  • Fact 1: John Wesley Hardin was captured and imprisoned in 1878 for the killing of a sheriff's deputy. Papers attributed him with at least 26 other murders.
  • Fact 2: During his 16 years in prison, Hardin studied law. Shortly after his release in 1894 he passed the Texas state bar exam and became a practicing lawyer.
  • Fact 3: El Paso deputy John Selman, Jr., after an argument over the arrest of Hardin's friend, found and killed Hardin in the Acme Saloon on August 19, 1895.
  • Fact 4: In 1868, a 15-year-old Hardin killed a former family slave in a fight. He then killed the three Union troops sent to arrest him and began his career as a fugitive.
  • Fact 5: Under the alias of Wesley Clemmons, Hardin peacefully encountered "Wild Bill" Hickok twice, but fled the famed lawman after the murder of a snoring neighbor.
