  • Fact 1: One of the earliest examples of a portable audio player, this gramophone played the same 78rpm records that are still in use today.
  • Fact 2: Manufactured by Thorens, a Swiss company that produced records and record players as early as 1903 and still exists today.
  • Fact 3: This model, the Thorens Excelda, was available in brown, red, blue, or green.
  • Fact 4: 10" records played at 78rpm had about ten minutes of talk time, versus Edison wax cylinders, which only had about three minutes.
  • Fact 5: This style of portable gramophone was known as a "folding camera" due to its resemblance to camera cases of the day.
